Patent drawings explain an invention through figures that a reader can compare with the written description. For a mechanical invention, a useful figure set shows the structure, its parts, and how they fit together.

What patent drawings show

A perspective or isometric view helps the reader understand the overall arrangement. Front, top, and side views reveal features that overlap in a single perspective. An exploded view separates components to explain an assembly.

Choose views for what they disclose. Repeating the same information on several sheets does not make a structure clearer. Internal features may require a section view; PatentDraw's public demo currently produces exterior views and an exploded view for its assembly template.

Drawings for a patent

A product rendering can emphasize color, material, and lighting. Drawings for a patent need to communicate the relevant structure or appearance. A photograph can be useful reference material, but converting its edges to black lines does not establish that the resulting disclosure is complete.

The current demo starts from predefined mechanical structures. Sketch and photo uploads are not available.

Reference numerals and lead lines

Reference numerals connect a part in a figure with the corresponding written description. A lead line points from the number to the feature. Check that the same number identifies the same part wherever it appears, and that each line reaches the intended feature.

Our template drawings include configured numerals and lead lines. Their placement is generated automatically; the browser does not yet offer a numeral editing tool.

Linework, sheets, and review

The demo exports black-and-white vector linework on an A4 sheet. Review the final linework, margins, labels, and view coverage for the intended application. See the patent drawing requirements checklist and the official USPTO drawing guidance.
