Patent drawing requirements

Review mechanical patent drawing drafts for view coverage, reference numerals, black-and-white lines, and sheet layout, with official USPTO sources.

Last updated: 2026-11-05

Use this checklist to review a mechanical drawing draft. Requirements depend on the application type and filing route. The linked official sources should guide the final review; this page is a practical summary.

The checklist

  • Structure: do the views disclose the features described in the application?
  • Linework: are edges clear at the final print size?
  • Numerals: does each reference number identify the intended part consistently?
  • Lead lines: can a reader follow each line without confusing it with geometry?
  • Layout: do the actual sheet size and margins meet the applicable rules?
  • Consistency: does the written description refer to the correct figures and parts?

Black-and-white linework

USPTO guidance normally calls for black-and-white drawings in utility applications. Inspect the exported file at the intended reproduction size. Faint lines, crowded labels, and raster artifacts can impair readability.

PatentDraw exports vector SVG and PDF. Its automated geometry checks inspect the model; they do not certify that the drawing satisfies patent-office requirements.

Margins and sheet layout

For U.S. drawing sheets, 37 CFR 1.84 specifies accepted sheet sizes and minimum margins. The standard minimum margins are 2.5 cm at the top and left, 1.5 cm at the right, and 1.0 cm at the bottom. Verify these against the current rule for your filing.

The demo produces A4 sheets, 210 × 297 mm. A4 dimensions alone do not establish compliance. Check the actual content boundary and the complete figure set after export.

Views a figure set needs

Select views to explain the invention. A section or detail view may be needed to reveal an internal feature. The public demo currently generates isometric, front, top, and right views, with an exploded view for the assembly template. It does not offer a section-view control.

Reference numerals and shading

Keep part numbers consistent between figures and text. Review the template's automatically placed labels for missing or ambiguous references. Appearance-focused shading and broken-line conventions require a separate review for design applications.
